MAKING GAMES THAT TEACH
The craft behind educational game design at Anthem Studios.
The biggest mistake in educational game design is treating the 'educational' and 'game' parts as separate. Players can feel when learning is bolted on as an afterthought — and they tune out immediately.
When we developed our educational game projects, our first question was always: what would make this genuinely fun to play? The learning had to emerge naturally from the gameplay loop, not interrupt it.
We discovered that competition, discovery, and meaningful choice are universal motivators. When a player solves a real problem by applying something they just learned in-game, the moment of understanding feels like a victory — not a lesson.
Our Awrudu Game project showed us how cultural content can be celebrated and taught through playful mechanics. Players engaged with Sri Lankan traditions in ways no classroom could replicate.
